Summing up a city you've grown up with is tough, but there are some spots in Detroit you absolutely shouldn't miss. Hop on the QLine from the Renaissance Center to reach the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), right across from the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library. Midtown's buzzing with art, culture, and tasty eats – check out Ima for amazing ramen/udon or Seva for their General Tso’s cauliflower and California scramble, both near the DIA.
Head over to Corktown for a stroll past the Michigan Central Station, being fixed up by Ford, then grab a bite at Mercury Burger Bar or Takoi. And for drinks, you can't go wrong with Two James Distillery or The Sugar House.
If you're in town early for our conference, swing by the Henry Ford Museum. It's got loads of cool stuff, from classic cars to Thomas Edison’s workshops, plus you can take a spin in a Ford Model T at Greenfield Village.
And if you've got more time, hit up the Motown Historical Museum. It's a breeze to get there on the QLine down Woodward Avenue.
You might have noticed that I've mentioned Woodward Avenue quite a bit in my suggestions (also known as M-1), which cuts through the heart of downtown Detroit. It holds a special place in automotive history as the first mile in America paved with concrete, and it still celebrates that heritage with the annual Woodward Dream Cruise. If we're lucky enough to have some warm weather during the conference (around 50-60°F / 10-15°C), you're sure to spot plenty of car enthusiasts cruising on Friday/Saturday, especially further north around 8 Mile to 15 Mile. If time and weather allow, taking a leisurely stroll from the Renaissance Center to Woodward and up to the Fox Theater is a delightful way to soak in the city's vibe.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need help navigating the city. The recommendations provided here are curated by our local arrangements committee members, who have personally visited these restaurants and venues. While this list doesn't cover all the wonderful experiences our city has to offer, we encourage you to explore further and share your experiences with us. We'd love to hear about what you discover and how much you enjoy it!
Thank you and welcome to the Motor City!
