Subject: [IUG] MARC field to use as identifier for ebook source
Apologies if this has already been discussed. I was not able to find what
I wanted in a search of the list archives.
What is a good MARC field to use in ebook records to identify the source
of the ebook? For example, I want to note whether it came from our
consortium or whether we purchased it separately or as part of a package,
etc. I am already using series fields for the "collection" that the book
belongs to, such as Gale Virtual Reference or ACLS Humanities E-Book. I
need to have a better way to keep track of where/how we obtained the book,
since many of these do not have order records attached. Some of them we
own, some of them are owned by our consortium, and then if we start doing
PDA, some of them won't be owned at all.
It would be best to not have this information display in the public
catalog. It would be ideal (for me) to be able to do a search on the
field, but that probably won't work out too well, so I can run lists.
I do have some titles available from more than one place, with multiple
856 fields, so it has been suggested that perhaps the 856|x might be best.
We do create item records for ebooks, so putting the info in the item
record is an option, but I'd like to hear some pros and cons and
suggestions from those who have been managing ebook records and pulling
statistics and so forth.
