Re: [IUG] Coverage for extended hours

Hi Gary,

We stay open until 2 a.m. Monday - Thursday during the regular semester, (then 24 hours starting the week before exams through the end of exams.)

We used to only stay open until midnight Monday - Thursday. Now, our regular Circ staff still leave at midnight, and student employees from the campus Public Safety unit monitor the library between midnight and 2 a.m. No services are available. Prior to midnight, Public Safety team members clear the building all except for the main floor and the ground floor, which remain open until 2 a.m. The rest of the building is closed off.

For the 24 hour period, staff from around the library work voluntary overtime. The entire building is open (only to Hofstra affiliates). I believe the voluntary overtime is in 4 hour shifts, from midnight to 4 a.m. and then 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. This is not just Circulation staff, but any of the union staff who want to work; they get time and a half pay for this. We've never had a problem filling the shifts. The Sunday shifts are particularly popular because they pay double time.

HTH,

Sarah

Subject: [IUG] Coverage for extended hours

Would like to hear from any academic libraries who offer extended late night service hours, but only during the last two or three weeks of a term, say till 2:00 a.m. or beyond. Are your regular circulation, or other library staff, expected to provide the extended coverage? Student employee coverage only? Is external private security hired to provide security instead?

If your regular full-time personnel are asked to cover, how do you handle circadian clock issues and other health and safety issues associated with sudden work schedule changes? We are a mid-sized academic library (12k enrollment) and are exploring being open till 2:00 a.m. the last three weeks of our quarters. There are only five of us in Circulation, thus figuring out how to cover so many hours (7:30 a.m. - 2:00 a.m.) with so few people is a problem. We are required to have a full-time employee on duty the entire time. TIA
