[IUG] modifying loan rules for items in circulation

Hi, I would like to add a grace period to some loan rules.  However, the IGR
contains the caution below:

Be very careful about modifying a loan rule while items using that loan rule
are in circulation. Changing the rules "in the middle of the game" can have
unintended consequences since events that have already taken place are
notre-done according to the modified loan rule.

Could there be negative consequences if I edit the rule while the affected
items are circulating?  What would those be?  As I see it, it seems that the
grace period won't be applied to the currently circulating items and this
seems acceptable.  However, would the edited loan rule take effect upon
checkin, so that the grace period would be correctly applied to future
checkouts?  Or would these items be forever corrupted?
