Hi again all (especially Bob, Diane, and Giles),
Thanks so much for your help! You all pointed me in the right direction, and
here's what I've figured out at this point:
-we do have a check digit, and the scanner seems to be interpreting that
correctly
-we have codabar codes, so that setting at least is correct
When I tried scanning from the barcode scanner into Notepad, I came up with
something really interesting. The student workers had told me that sometimes
the scanner works, but often they had to scan an item repeatedly before they
could get it to recognize the item correctly.
Typing the barcode numbers as they appear on the sticker into Millenium
seems to work just fine.
The first time I scanned my test item, the numbers appeared exactly as they
did on the sticker, so just to check I typed them into Millenium and had no
problems.
I tried scanning the barcode on this item into Notepad repeatedly and found
the problem - the scanner seems to be dropping digits from the middle of the
barcode, more or less at random. It was never the same digit twice in a row,
and it would vary between dropping one and two digits.
I tried swapping out the cord with the cord from another scanner, and now
after scanning one item (immediately after the cord is connected) the light
on top goes to red and stays there - I can't scan any other materials
because the scanner won't activate when something is put in front of it.
Does anyone out there have any other thoughts? The only solution I can think
of at this point is that the dang thing is broken and I should just throw it
out the window and order another one.
Thanks again for any solutions you might have,
Megan
