Hello,

We a Consortium we have 19 scopes.

Most of them are for locations some different institutions has his own catalog using a customized scope.

Few are for material type (electronic resources, serials)

One are for the old books (books before 1900): we create a different sope to show all the old books like it was a different catalog

One are to show the Special collections inside our consortium.

UC Berkeley uses scopes for a few categories of things:

- webpac searching - mostly for locations, but also some formats
including dissertations/theses: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/ and click
on the "entire collection" drop down on the right to see the scopes
available in the opac

- staff editing - branches can only edit items and holdings for their
locations - some scopes also allow editing of groups of locations

- create lists searching - if you know all the records you want will be
within a certain scope (location or format), setting your login to that
scope (if it isn't set that way already) and clicking "use scoped
search" in create lists can make a two hour search take 15 minutes
