Re: [IUG] Open Library books in the catalog

Yes, to John and Yvonne and others interested, there's an easy free source of MARC records for
about 415 e-books and another 65 or so e-audiobooks at: http://www.clicweb.org/import-marc-records .
They required very little massaging.

Thanks Rick for the link to the lending libraries MARC records for Open Library. They don't seem to be quite as full records as the other -- has anyone tried loading them into the catalog?

I posted the query to web4lib as well and Tim Spalding suggested sort of an "additional resources" sidebar
with connections for it. That sounds like a good idea for these kinds of things too (if I can figure out the
way we need to link out to it) -- but our folks might actually want entries directly in the catalog!

Also, I notice in going to Open Library that their entries fall into several different categories: Read (presumably direct - like the PG books), Daisy (protected), Borrow (via overdrive) and Borrow from a library.
I have a problem with adding "Borrow from a library" entries to our catalog -- I don't see a need to replicate
WorldCat or anyone else's catalog. Does anyone have know if they limited the "lending library" ones to just the
other categories.

Also being that it's only me and a colleague, I have no intention of doing anything as intensive as the Kent State project -- it has to be quick and dirty or we don't do it.

We recently added a group of Project Gutenberg books for which there
were MARC records already
created. Now our Collections Development librarian want to do the same
with some books from
Open Library (and perhaps become a "lending library" as part of it). I
only see records there in JSON
and BibTex format (no MARC records).

Has anyone else done this and how did you add in the records? Any
suggestions would be welcome
either on or off list.

Thanks.
