Re: [IUG] What do you want from Sierra?

Since the database behind Sierra is PostgreSQL, an open source SQL, you will be able to create your own reports by reading the data directly.

BTW: Since III started on Sierra a year ago I suspect that design has already taken place that is now locked. Thus, some of these "requests" are way too late to be considered.

Yes I'd agree with the jre comment. Asynchronous
javascript works on all the current browsers now
and a great Web interface is possible even on
slightly out of date workstations.

The java client-server thing is a headache because of
firewalls, lack of encryption and the need to install the
Millennium package into a read-write directory in an area of
the PC that normally would be locked down in a
business environment. IT managers don't like any of this
and the library has to argue with them about it in
cases where IT is under a different reporting line.

Mark

Getting rid of the jre based staff clients and going web
browser from day one would be a good start

So, Innovative is developing a new ILS called Sierra. I'd
like to start a discussion here about what we as Innovative
customers would like to see in this new system. It's not
clear how far along they are in development, but it seems
like we should make some input into what we want from this
new system as early in the process as possible. This could
be an opportunity to address fundamental issues that can only
be solved when you are designing a system from the ground up.

Let's tell III our thoughts on these questions:

What are the weaknesses of the current system that you would
like to see improved in Sierra?

How would you suggest improvement?

What are the strengths that you want to be sure are preserved
in the new system?
