It's possible to do the same kind of thing with the Millennium Java client -- it's just much more difficult. People prefer to automate the old character-based system, not because it's the only way, but because it's the easiest way.

There was a recent thread on the code4lib listserv [1] about various ways in which you can extract MARC records from an Innovative system, including brute-force "spidering" of the catalog.

Honestly, none of these methods (even using expect) are particularly appealing. These are all horrible -- let me repeat: horrible -- workarounds for the fact that Innovative does not provide a good, fully-automated export facility. (Scheduler is, at best, a half-way solution.)

This topic is now a regular one here, as people struggle with the task of exporting records to discovery system providers, Boopsie, Library Thing, and other places. Other ILS systems have long been able to do this in a fully automated way -- and usually at no additional charge to the library.

It's high time Innovative customers demand the same!

Subject: [IUG] Automating MARC record output via Millennium ?

Hello all,

Pretty sure I know the answer to my question already but throwing it out on
the list just in case...

We're in the process of implementing Summon and looking at ways to automate
MARC record updating. The hitch is that we made the decision in 2009 to go
"Millennium only" for create lists and no longer have that functionality in
our character-based system.

Unless I'm mistaken, we cannot use a script (e.g. Expect) to automate daily
MARC ouput to Serials Solutions without the create lists functionality in
character-based, correct?

Are there any "Millennium only" sites out there who've implemented Summon or
other discovery tool, and how do you go about updating your MARC record
data?

We do have Millennium scheduler but it doesn't handle date variables so its
not very useful for this task.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice,

Jim
