Re: [IUG] Using PIN or both PIN and barocode for patrons requesting materials via WebOPAC

Jeff,

Your information is great. Thank you. Did you ever consider using ezproxy, instead of ldap for authentication? We are using ldap with OCLC products. But, our ITS is retiring ldap, and moving to ezproxy. If we decide on the PIN as our solution, I would like to contact you via the phone. Would you please provide your contact information in an email to me? Thanks, again. Gene

Ezekiel 36:26-27
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;
I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you
a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause
you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

We use LDAP as our primary method of authentication but we do provide
patrons with the option to authenticate via their last name, barcode (we
call this the PID), and PIN. Our community user must authenticate using
the PIN method. See our patron verification page:
https://webcat.lib.unc.edu/patroninfo~S1/

The pin method works well other than the often initial confusion in
setting the PIN up. If a patron has never logged into My Millennium, they
set the PIN during their first login attempt. This is confusing to some
of our patrons at first but isn't a big deal most of the time.

Staff can change or delete the PIN if a patron forgets the PIN number
(that's the biggest headache associated with using PINS) but there is a
"reset your pin" option now included in the Web OPAC so that has taken a
lot of burden off staff having to do this for patrons. Page # 107429 in
the manual discusses this option.

I'm happy to discuss the function over the phone if you need more
information.

Jeff
