Re: [IUG] Modify Loan Rule vs. New Loan Rule

Alison,

As I understand it, "Original Due Date or Date of Renewal" is a system setting in Circ Options, so it will effect all renewals and all loan rules. This sounds like a policy question to me. What do you want your renewal policy to be at your library? (For inquiring minds, it's Circ Options, #37.)

If you truly want to change your policy, you would change the circ option and probably the "Time Remaining B4 Renew" parameter in all your loan rules. Also consider how you have set the "Check loanrule at time of renewal" option.

Your original question was "do I create new loan rules"? Well, if I were doing this, I'd do a lot of testing with an existing loan rule (that I use just for testing) and make sure it works the way I want it to after making my changes. If you don't have the time and energy to test, create new loan rules. And whatever you do, do not delete your existing rules. Never, ever, ever delete a loan rule. :-)

Hi Carol,

Actually, the patrons we've heard from want something else. The patron thinks s/he checks out a 21 day item, which is due 10-1. Then they opt to renew that item at some point prior to the due date. They think the due date should then be 10-21, not the date that is currently generated, reflecting 21 days from the date they renewed. They want 6 weeks total, not say, 5 weeks and 2 days. Does that make sense?

Alison,

We have our system set to calculate renewal "from time of renewal". This means that if an item is checked out today and is due Oct 13 and then renewed tomorrow, the new due date is Oct 14, 3 weeks from the renewal date.

It sounds like this is the behavior you want.
