Re: [IUG] Millennium client issues after campus VoIP implementation

The problem is likely network traffic shaping. We're not VOIP yet, but we're moving that way. Both Millennium and Cisco-based VOIP routing run on port 2000. The best solution is to ask Innovative to move Millennium to an alternate port.

Subject: [IUG] Millennium client issues after campus VoIP implementation

One of our consortium members recently implemented VoIP for their entire campus. The Millennium desktop client developed some strange behavior on their site after the VoIP activation. We are not certain, but we believe the problem may be QoS for voice.

The consortium member cannot seem to get more than five or six successful Millennium connections going at the same time. The connections are unreliable and sometimes die. In the past they were able to log on at least fifteen sessions with no problems.

The Innovative server is located on University of New Mexico campus, which is about two miles away. The firewall is open to the other campus and there are no login restrictions set on the server for the Millennium client. Laptops successfully start the Millennium client on the University of New Mexico campus but will not start the Millennium client on the other campus once the five or six connection limit has been reached. None of our other remote consortium sites are experiencing Millennium connectivity issues.

We have reviewed the port 2000 and 4600 settings numerous times. All ports are open and configured as they should be.

The theory is that QoS for voice is somehow throttling the IP bandwidth that the Millennium client uses.

Has anyone else implemented VoIP and run into this problem? We would appreciate any feedback that you can give us.

Thanks,
