We are an academic library as well and the patron must have an ID with a picture. If they don't have their university ID with them, then they need at least have a photo ID.
I've caught people using other people's ID cards in the past when they have a problem with their own account.
I'm not sure how you could prevent someone from using a self-check with someone else's ID card or iPhone. We don't have a self-check, but the San Diego County does.
On a side note, we've used an iPhone to receive discounts at restraunts. You can view coupons on the screen from email or the web, but just can't print. We've shown the cashier the screen and they accept the coupon.

Our cards have a name and a face along with the barcode.
However, we are an academic library and the card is the student's ID card. Which presents a different scenario. Having an ID card is just the first step in identifying the student. The patron record give more info.
OK, or expired, owes money, owes books, blocked, etc.
Since the iphone does not display the name and face I don't see us accepting it. Even though the patron record may indicate 'current' status.
Thanks
Steve
