Leigh,
Take a look at this webpage. Sending a SMS is just as easy as sending an email.

Subject: [IUG] SMS notifications
I've been asked to look into possible 3rd party software to send SMS
notifications to patrons for circulation notices. Is anyone aware of
any options?
I do know that Innovative will be offering an SMS messaging product for
hold pickup notifications soon, and we're considering that as well.
Thanks--
Leigh
