Re: [IUG] Floating Collections

Houston Public Library has almost the same problem with their Central
Library that you described.

Houston Public has a Central Library and multiple branches with a good
hierarchical setup. The Floating process works fine for them.

The problem is the Central Library has multiple departments all tied to a
single terminal (stat) group. When checking in selected ITEM types that
should be returned to a specific Central bib location, the system doesn't
know which location in the Terminal Group to float the item to and floats
the item to the first location in the "locations served" group.

We submitted an enhancement the last go-round (in the Circulation Ancillary
Programs, Issue ID: 2379) that described our similar problem and suggested
Floating Collection be developed in a more robust manner. We thought it
would be helpful to have additional data elements in the float table or a
way to combine the elements to accommodate specific item types that need to
float to a subject location.

In hoping to solve our float problem, we talked to several III staff and
ended up having to add some new location item codes similar to the branch
hierarchical scheme just to float 'selected' ITYPES.

We still don't have an overall float solution for the Central Library and no
one could suggest anything that I considered a viable alternative.

If you would like to discuss this further, I have added my contact info
below.

Subject: [IUG] Floating Collections

We are about to implement floating collections. I am concerned about
how Millennium will handle these items when checked in at our Main
Library and wonder if anyone with a similar setup has any suggestions.

At our Main Library, we have a Locations Served entry for each of our
subject divisions, several entries for Main Circulation to handle our
two hold pickup locations and get proper stats, and one big Locations
Served entry for Main that includes all location codes for Main Library.

Our dilemma is: how can we set the Locations Served table up so that
when Main Circulation checks in a floating item, the system overlays the
proper subject division's two-character branch/division code instead of
the two character code established for the circulation desk where it
will be received?

I do have a call open with the Help Desk, but wonder if anyone has found
a way to deal with this.

Thank you,
