Hi Paula,
I have to ask, why does your cataloger want to do this? The 028 field is
designated for music publisher numbers, either sheet music or recorded,
and has a subfield for the publisher name. I don't like to think of
myself as a hidebound cataloger, but changing field names and using them
for other than the purpose for which they were designed seems like an
unwise idea to me. Without further info, I can't really give an informed
opinion. Is your cataloger looking for a way to search by publisher
name? That's what the 260 field is for. If the bib record is not for a
music item, it should not even have a 028 field. Hope this helps, (gosh

My cataloguer has asked me if we could rename field 028 (publisher name,
which is displayed in records as Music #). I have searched as much as I
could and I am not finding a way of renaming the fields. None of the
command
choices in cataloging give me the option to rename a variable field. I

able to replace fields but haven't found a way to rename it. 

 

We would like to rename this field but we are not sure if its possible.
