Just wanted to add to the list of experiences with Yahoo images in encore. We did enable it initially and yes, we did get results where pornographic images came up. This upset some folks and the value was questioned so we ended up removing the Yahoo images altogether. The results and relevancy of the Yahoo images were certainly mixed- I'm not sure that it really added much value.

My personal opinion is that it depends on your library and clientele. I think the Yahoo images are too random to display prominently in the catalog, especially for academic libraries. For example, we have a book called: "Pamela: or, Virtue still rewarded, a story". The yahoo images included a lot of pictures of Pamela Sue Anderson! If you like random associations, then this would be fine; if you want your images to relate a little more closely, then yahoo images wouldn't be for you.

Why should we keep the Yahoo images in Encore 2.0 rather than having
them removed so that everything else in the right column can move up? I
would be interested to hear other's thoughts on this, whether you have
Encore or not. I can see that it's cool to have the images, and not
only has a "wow" factor and is visually appealing but also it's Encore
as a discovery platform for all kinds of things and not just a catalog
search. On the other hand, I can't see why this one particular Internet
resource is so important that it should be on this page, especially on
the top; I'd rather do everything I can to help people find things in
our catalog and to get them to click on the link to find results in our
INN-Reach consortium. I love all the extremely useful things on the
Encore results screen, but I don't see how the Yahoo images is nearly as
useful, and I see it as just making it harder to see the other things.
Maybe there's something I'm just not thinking of?
