Re: [IUG] Related Searches (2007 set)

Hi, Harriet. I'm big on this topic, so this might just be too much
information.

First of all, have you already had III do the reindexing to add
authority records to your advanced keyword index? Have you installed a
relsearch.html file in your screens directory? If it was working once,
and broke when you loaded Rel. 2007, contact the helpdesk. This happened
to a number of libraries and there is a patch available.

In webpac Pro, you only see the related searches link when there is
something to display. Try a keyword search in our catalog for "expert
witnesses". http://columbo.law.cua.edu/search/X?SEARCH=expert+witnesses

As of 2007, the first segment of the Relsearch wwwoption determines
whether related searches appear in the search tool or in the resource
table in system-generated results screens. The second element defines
the display text (but not the link text) and the optional third element
determines if the first few related searches display directly on the
results screen (truncated to 15 characters!) or if only a link to the
relsearch popup displays.

To see it without the third element, try the same search on our staging
server: http://columbo.law.cua.edu:2082/search/X?SEARCH=expert+witnesses
In theory, displaying the related searches directly on the results page
is a big improvement over the link, but this truncation is just clutzy.
In law, at least, there are plenty of long subject terms, e.g,
Intellectual property (international law).

There is also a <!--{relsearch}--> token which determines the placement
of the related searches link in bib_display.html, resource_display.html,
etc. This is for when a search results in only one hit, and the user is
taken directly to a record.

If you use the WebpacPro 2007 OPAC menu page (the one that's just a
search box), then according to the manual at Page # 106949, the
<!--{relsearch}--> token is needed so that if the search returns no bib
record results but does match on authority records the related searches
link will display.

New in the 2007 example set is a button for related searches,
relsearch.gif, but there is no icon_relsearch option to match. On our
test server, before I configured either the relsearch or the
resourcetable wwwoptions, the related searches button showed up at the
bottom of my resource table. Now I can't get it to show up at all.

Are you using Related Searches. I am going over the wwwoptions and
looking at RELSEARCH. I have not been able to figure out where to "turn
this option" on. The manual talks about it as in option on the
SearchTool, but clueless where to modify. Thanks.
