Someone please help me out with this. I am not a system
administrator. I have searched the online Innovative Guide and
Reference every way I can think of and cannot find what I am looking for.
I have discovered that some of the serials linking fields (76x-78x)
in our catalog do not actually work as links (in fact, they do not
even display!), and I'm trying to ask our system admin to change
this. She wanted to know whether I wanted to add the missing fields
into the keyword index. I don't think this is what I want at all. I
want them to be "hotlinks." What makes the fields work as clickable
links? I do not think it is the same as "indexing" because I found
the following post in the list archives: "Our MARC 77X-78X fields are
not indexed. That said, the WebOPAC does 'hotlink' them to search to
perform a title search."
Our 780 and 785 fields do work as clickable "hotlinks", and it
appears that ours are set up so that a title search is performed on
the |t portion of the field. This results in less-than-ideal results
when the heading is a name-title (e.g. Botanical Society of
America.|tAbstracts of papers) because the title portion is generic
and matches many other titles. Should the search be by ISSN, or OCLC
number? What setting determines which part of that field actually
gets searched when you click on the link?
Thank you in advance. Copying your response to my email address would
be extremely helpful since I get this list in digest form.
