I'm sure that your explanation of how it works is correct. We happen
to have two entries in our catalog for two authors named "Engs" -- so
the search puts you right above them. In that sense, it "worked."

I think the pipe character works only when what precedes the pipe is
the entirety of an indexed field. Using a pipe with the partial
contents of an indexed field typically results in no match, and
appending a pipe to the entire contents of an author entry is likely
to get you the same results as not appending the pipe.
Going back to the original question...appending a pipe to "engs" in
an author index search will result in "no matches found", not a list
of authors whose last name is Engs (unless there are several authors
with the single name Engs in your catalog).
