We didn't need a separate IE stylesheet when we implemented the tabbed search page, but we did for the tabbed bib_display.html. So while our search pages would be just fine, our bib displays would go kerflooey without the IE stylesheet. I just removed the IE stylesheet in our staging catalog if you'd like to take a peek:

We don't use tabs, but it is my understanding that the tabs in bib record displays and search pages can both behave oddly in IE absent the IE-specific styling. Perhaps someone who uses tabs in both situations can comment? If you ditch the IE-specific style sheet do both go kerflooey or just one?
