The SRU server is the "next generation" Z39.50 client (it's an XML, web
services based protocol) that LC has made available for about 3 years
now. You can find out more information at:

2) SRU is simple (demonstrates LC's usage):

You wouldn't be able to use III's Z39.50 server to query the SRU client
(I think) -- however, tools like Yaz's Z39.50 Client or MarcEdit's
Z39.50 client can make use of the SRU server and translate the MARCXML
records that it retrieves directly into regular old MARC -- which can
then be used in one's III system.
