We have only very rare occasions when and item is checked out 
"indefinitely".

We have a professor with a couple of very specialized items that was of 
interest only to his class instruction. Thus, he has had them for about 
eight years.
He came in recently, very annoyed that every year he had to renew the 
items.

After checking with cataloging, we checked the items in, suppressed the 
bib records, gave the items to the professor, and told him we wouldn't 
be bothering him anymore.

We checked them out indefinitely.
