Folks,
My mother tells me I am going to regret this, but my inner voice says to
try and do a good deed. I know it is a little late, but if anyone is
interested I live near the Omni Shoreham Motel (about 1.2 miles according
to Google maps - SEE BELOW). I live in the Adams Morgan area. The room is
very nice and has its own private bath (with two showers!) and a 42"
screen TV and Sirius satellite radio. You can either sleep on the sofa or
use the queen size Aero Bed (with platform!). You can also share the
kitchen. I intend to go to the conference most days by walking. I say it
is about a 25 minute walk, but I suspect some are faster than me. You
could also take a cab. Their are a million restaurants five minutes from
where I live and if you would like to see a little more of the city than
just the area around the hotel it might be something you want to consider.
If your institution can afford the travel and hotel, then please don't
contact me. If there is someone out there who could go, but for the cost
of a room, or a "Gosh, we would love if Jane or Bill could go with us, but
we can't cover it in this year's budget" then that's the best fit. This
isn't charity. Just trying to help.
Here are the caveats:
I live with my partner (read between the lines)
No smoking
No drugs
No wild parties
No expectation that we will bond and become best of friends (although that
would be nice, but who are we kidding)
No making a mess
No taking my stuff (especially my myriad objet d'arts - all fakes -
scattered throughout my home).
And - most importantly - the understanding that DC is a diverse city and
on your walk you will encounter Latinos, African Americans, Ethiopians,
Koreans, young, old, rich, poor, students and the occasional nut-job. We
also have Zip Car.
Basically, just be respectful and understand you are a guest in someone's
home.
If this doesn't work for you then the Omni is your best bet.
Please contact me off-line if you wish to discuss.
Thanks!
