Thank you Andrew. Your response gave me just the kind of information I
was
looking for.
I understand now what's happening and where it comes from and maybe we
will
put in an enhancement request or two. It would be useful functionality.
Frankly hiding the message and only showing it when the Author search
appears
or placing it in the search field (which sounds even better to me) are
definitely
better solutions. I would be interested in how to make the latter happen
and
will be in touch if I have any questions.
Thanks again,
Giles

Not sure if you received a response to this.
There's nothing intelligent going on behind the firstname lastname swap.
The system just takes two words, reverses their order and separates them
with a comma. If you search for "cheesy fries" in the author field, the
system will kindly ask if you want "fries, cheesy" -- no consultation of
your author index is taking place. This little script seems to ignore
any search values that are not two words, even if the words are valid
author terms. So the inclusion of a middle initial aborts the script and
no reveral is suggested. I'm afraid this smacks of an enhancement
request, although it might be worth a helpdesk call first.
As far as I know, the swap only occurs for Author searches (hence, no
reversal of Course Professor names). It's *possible* that III could set
this up for your 'p' index, but I highly doubt it. The setting is found
at A-A-S-O-O -> 'Offer option to reverse author name on failed search',
but it doesn't allow you to set the index(es).
A popup prompting the user to type LastName, FirstName is certainly
doable, but pretty intrusive. You'd be forcing all users who already
know how to search by author to click the popup away. This is considered
Bad. Instead of a popup, you could have the message hidden in a div
directly above the search field, and show the message only when the
Author index is selected from the dropdown. Or you could have the
message appear right in the search field (I'd recommend adding
'onfocus="this.select()"' to the searcharg input in this case; then the
message will be highlighted and easily deleted when the cursor enters
the field).
Let me know if you want details on how to hide/show your message.
