Maybe someone could help me with a crochet project I've been trying to start - but it seems strange to look to the IUG for that kind of help!?!

It sounds like fun! It also sounds like there is a critical mass of knitters (and other stitchers) that would make it worthwhile to schedule an evening and then publicize it.
