This might help the decision Janice - 2007 offers a "Forgot your PIN"
feature that emails the user a secure link through which they can reset
the PIN. We are on WebPAC 2007 in our production environment and have
had it active for a few months now. It works like a dream!

We are also a site that has always used PINs. Several years ago we
wanted to test NOT using PINs, and iii was able to set up another port
for that purpose; it wasn't something we could do ourselves. Also that
was before WebPac Pro and ecommerce, both of which might complicate
things. I'm sure iii could give you a more definitive answer on that.

We have always used PINs. We use last name, barcode and PIN. The patron
can set their own PIN if they do not already have one. They just fill in
the blanks, and when the computer sees that there is no PIN, a new
screen is returned and they have to enter the PIN twice (like setting
any password)and then it is in their record. It is an all or nothing
switch. I do not believe you can test in staging first. Yes, patrons who
seldom use their PINs forget them, but they are easily reset. The staff
can do it, or the staff can delete the field and the patron can start
all over.
Most of the time when a patron calls and says they cannot access their
account, it is not the PIN that caused the problem. The library card has
expired or there is a block on their account for non-returned materials
or late fees over the amount which we have set.

We're looking for some feedback from libraries who have added PINs to
the WebOPAC. Currently we use the last name and barcode to authenticate.
We are looking to change to a name, barcode, PIN combination.
Is there a way to test this on the staging port before we switch the
live port's authentication?
What have your experiences been with lost or forgotten pins?
Is there staff intervention required to reset pins, and if so, what have
been your experiences? What procedures do you have in place if someone
calls or emails because they are unable to get onto their account
because of a PIN mismatch?
