Minuteman Library Network made the change from Item-level paging (Regional
Holds) to Priority paging (Title-level paging) in March of 2006, and we
haven't looked back.
It is more efficient since the first available copy can fill a request, not
the particular item that the item-level paging chose. We find far fewer
"stuck" requests.
I have posted to the IUG Clearinghouse much of the material we used to
promote Priority Paging to library staff and to train staff to understand
and use it. Other than how to deal with the Hold Cancellation Notices that
result when paging has been unsuccessful (and you can choose to leave these
requests at the Bib level as an option if you wish), there has not been much
adjustment for staff.
Go the IUG Clearinghouse and search : Priority paging.
Oh yes, now you have to run 2 paging lists: a Title Paging list for the bulk
of the Copy Returned Soonest requests, and an Item Paging List for the
multivolume works, which still need to be paged at the item level.
Our consortium consists of 41 libraries. Quite a few of these libraries have
one or more branches. We have configured the Priority paging table so that
requests are paged first at any branches related to the hold pickup location
, and only then are paged at unrelated locations (By default, a request is
always paged first at the pickup location if possible)
Feel free to ask more, and good luck with your transition.

Hello,
I am also interested in experiences with moving from item level paging
to title level paging. Please respond to the list.

Soon we will be moving from item level paging to title-priority paging.
Any words of wisdom that you'd like to share, caution us about? Also,
for those of you that have multiple branches did you choose to setup the
Paging Priority table or let the system hold the paging randomly?
