Is anyone out there using Inventory Express? If so, what has your

I can provide this much info:
at least as of Release 6 (1990)the request feature was available, as an
option controlled locally. However, at that time the requests always
went into a file to be reviewed by staff; automatic request processing
was not yet available. By 1995, automatic request processing also was
available as an option, to be setup by III. Don't know exactly when
automatic request processing actually became available, just that it was
around by 1995.
I know in our history we went back and forth. I originally had the
Request option turned on; for some reason either circulation or
reference objected and it was turned off. Later it was turned on again.
[Hmmm... maybe I should start writing down a history/log of our local
III system decisions and timeline too.]

I'm trying to put together a timeline of key events in our use of the
III system. Can anyone tell me if the Request feature has always been a
part of Innopac (before the Web Opac)? I know Berkeley Public went live
with III in 1991, but I'm not sure if we started out with the Request
feature.

We implemented Courtesy notices via email about two years or so ago.
We don't send Courtesy notices for every item. Only for items that are
checked out for longer than one week. The notice is sent three days
before the item is due.
We had been sending the first notice via snail mail. It was printed on
the third day after overdue. The patron would get the notice six or more
days after it was due. Since our "grace period" is three days the notice
always meant they owed us money.
We were already sending overdue notices by email. We had signs at the
circulation desk stating that notices would be sent by email.
Andrews was already sending out "official" notices via email.
All of our students and faculty have a campus email. Those that prefer
may go to a campus web page and have their campus email forwarded to
another account such as hotmail, yahoo, etc. so that they can get the
notices.
We changed the first notice to go out by email on the day after the item
was due. In the notice was a note that the item might be renewed online.
If they got on it and renewed before the end of the grace period there
was no fine.
We had about a 75% drop in fines paid. We also discovered that our
administration had budgeted for us to receive a certain amount in fines.
It was "income" to them. That is no longer a budget item. We don't
really care about the money, we just want the item returned. Emailing
courtesy notices and the first notice helps the item to come back.
We have had thank you notes from people on trips out of town that got an
email notice and then renewed online and avoided a fine.

We send Courtesy Notices automatically and a few others in specific
departments.
Auto notices must go by email (phone?).
The set up process requires an email address as a printer. It will not
accept a print station.(We wish it did.)
If a patron does not have an email address the notice is sent to the
email address specified. It will not go to a printer (because you are
not allowed to specify a printer). [Yes, I am upset about that. III Help
desk says to ask for an enhancement. I have, but it hasn't made the cut
yet.]
You will need to have at least one staff person setup as a "notices
administrator" to control the auto notices.

Hi Katie.
We use the Star TSP743, and they have been flawless. They will also
autocut, plus we have them programmed to print our logo on each receipt.

We've used Star printers for years and they are workhorses.
I just did an analysis of their line and ordered 6 new Star TSP613
printers for checkout/checkin. A bit less expensive than the 743 and
743II, $220 a piece from CDW-G, and I think the only sacrifice was that
is
they are not autocut. They are USB printers, which is another
substantial
variable, and they are supported under a wide range of Windows OS.

I copy the auto notices to my email address and set a filter in Outlook
that automatically prints the notice. We do this for specific notices
(final overdue notices & invoices).

One quick additional note to keep in mind - autonotices must be
configured to be sent out every day. If, for some reason, the system
fails to process any of its notices for one day's cycle, all autonotices
are lost. Other notices will go out the next time notices run, but
autonotices will not - at least that has been the case for us on the two
occasions when our system failed to send out notices on a particular
day. I do not find this terrible, just annoying.

Hi,
We are a new UK customer who went live with Millennium before Christmas
and use auto notices. We send them as courtesy notices, recall notices
and all overdues apart from the final one. We send these manually so
that we can print them and shelf check for the item in question before
sending what is in effect a request for payment.
The main issues we have had relate to our sending of courtesy notices,
which our users have been asking for us to send for over a year before
we changed systems. Now we are sending them we have found that while a
number of people find them useful the queries were:
1. The text of the notices - we needed to amend our original text as
our users thought it was a notice to return the item, even though the
header was 'Reminder notice'. The text now says something like 'this is
a notice to remind you that your books are soon due for return. You can
renew them online at
http://library.aston.ac.uk ) This seems to have
removed the confusion.
2. Non-sending of emails - we have had a couple of periods when for
some reason the notices were not sent automatically by the system. This
may have been an initial teething problem with our new system. However,
what this did reveal is that users quickly picked up that they had not
had a courtesy notice and tried to use this as justification for not
paying fines. The common excuse being 'I didn't get a courtesy notice
from you to remind me my book was due back so I didn't realise it would
be overdue so it is unfair to have to pay the fines as your system
didn't tell me.' (needless to say we didn't think this was a valid
reason for late return of books.)
Hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Emma

Dear all,
Our consortium started printing the patron's barcode on circulation
notices
as a part of the patron address block as by Page # 102190 of the
Innovative
Manual.
The problem is now that if one doesn't fold the notice just right, the
barcode displays in the envelope's window - a big privacy concern with
our
libraries.
Is there any other way to include the patron's barcode in the notices
without displaying it a couple of lines under the address?
Thank you,
Inna Ivers

Hi Anna,
In Circulation Options (A>A>S>O>C > Circulation options) 066 > Notices:
Where to print Patron Name & Address....................7,9;40,6
If you choose P you can see the layout of the note and change it as you
wish.

Hello Said and all,
>From what I've read the patron barcode can only be displayed as a part
of
the patron address block which cannot exceed 6 lines. Therefore I am
stuck
with the barcode displaying on the 6th or the 1st line (option 71)
Even if I set a bigger width of the patron's address block (option 66),
the
barcode will have to be ABOVE or BELOW the 1st/last line.
Is there any other option that may designate a new place for the barcode
or
am I missing something here?
Thank you,
Inna Ivers

Inna,
I think in the new release (2007), you will have the option to select
which fields to appear on notices, and more.
