[IUG] Turning a Status Label into a Link

Like most III installations, our bib display includes the call number,
location, and status from the item records. I would like to replace the
text label for one particular status (in process) with some
functionality that would allow users to request the item (the request
button is at the top of the screen, but many users don't see it). I
would have like to just created a label that said 'To request this item
use the Request button above', but manual page #103168 says 
this label is limited to 14 characters!
 
Has anyone replaced the label for a status with a graphic or button that
could be used to trigger the request function? Or made the label text a
hot link?
