I am hoping that Release 2007 will include an option for 856 links to
always open in a new window. I saw that enhancement listed on a
presentation by Dinah Sanders at the Northwest regional IUG conference
in October 2006. However, I don't see that enhancement listed on the
Release 2007 Preliminary Enhancements List
(http://csdirect.iii.com/csd/release_notes/enhlist/Rls2007_Prelim_Enhlis
t.php).

It is possible to force 856 links to open in a new window by inserting
the appropriate HTML <a> in the 856|z field, like this:

856 |uAbsoluteURLhere |z<A HREF="AbsoluteURLhere" target="_blank">View
Document Online</A>

With this code, the user sees the following hyperlink text:
View Document Online

The target="_blank" part of the <a> tag is what causes selection of the
hyperlink to spawn a new window.

A word of warning, however. From a usability point of view, spawning
new browser windows is not necessarily a desirable thing. Since some
browser's new window fills the screen, users may wonder where the
catalog window went, and why they can get Back to it from the new
window. Users can also end up with a multitude of new windows.

In addition, putting an <a> tag in the 856|z creates invalid HTML -
because the result is an <a> tag nested within another <a> tag. This is
currently not a problem with the browsers I use, but may be a problem in
the future with standards-compliant browsers.

And if III includes the option to open 856 field links in a new window,
you would probably want to remove the <a> tag from 856|z.
