John,
There was a presentation at IUG 2007 by Richard Jackson on regular
expressions and he specifically listed some expressions that do not work
in Millennium. The pipe was one of them. Other characters include ?,
\w, \d, etc. Check the presentations for IUG 2007 on the IUG website
and there you will find his handout (very, VERY helpful).

Subject: [IUG] Or (|) in regular expressions in Create Lists
The Manual says on page 100672 that "The system supports the regular
expression syntax of the UNIX egrep program." However, it seems that
the vertical bar does not work as an "or" operator as in egrep -- I
would guess because it's what Innovative uses for the subfield delimiter
in their display and searches.
E.g.: BIBLIOGRAPHIC MARC Tag 856 matches "google|yahoo"
Has anybody managed to use this or something else for "or," or is the
only option to put different regular expressions on separate lines in
your create list, as in the following?
BIBLIOGRAPHIC MARC Tag 856 matches "google" OR BIBLIOGRAPHIC MARC Tag
856 matches "yahoo"
