We have ICODE2 set up for this: '-' is standard acquisitions, 'g' is gift.
Then we record details of the gift (donor, date processed) in a
variable-length note field.

Our current method is similar to the one Elizabeth describes. We had asked
III to add a pseudo-MARC field to our item records. This allows us to use
various subfields to store a variety of data. We have designated a specific
subfield to record gift information.

Before we added this field, we used to store gift information in an internal
note field. You might want to explore this option before deciding to add a
new field. To facilitate pulling these items into a review file, you will
need to agree on a specific word or phrase which must be used in these
notes. (We used "gift.") Whether or not this is the best option for you
will depend on how you are using the internal notes field.

We had III add a variable field called "gift" added to our item records, and
several of our libraries use this to add gift information.

They can do a review file one items added in a particular time period that
have a gift field (gift does not equal nothing) to get statistics.
If they use consistent formats for these gift notes, for example :
"Memorial Gift in honor of ..." and "To celebrate the birth of...", they can
use those phrases to get more specific statistics on different types of
gifts.
They can also use these special notes for lists, etc.

There's an example of a search here:
