Having worked a little with the Javascripts that kick out the finalized
search string (at least in Pro), I think I remember that the scripts just
string together the input from each text entry box, apparently assuming that
users will only booleanate through the AND/OR dropdowns, which don't take
nesting into account. I think. I don't know whether the system is capable
of handling that. If it does (anybody?), and if one knows a little JS
programming, it shouldn't be too hard to add the parenthesizing feature -
just make a new function, perhaps in srchhelp_X, as I believe my sysadmin
has told me III is understandably reluctant to have you replace their JS
files (something only they are able to do).

The same thing happens for us--we're on Release 2006 1.3 with the Example
Set from November 2006. It would seem that the parens *should* be
automatic.
