Yes, pipe truncation is better but I'm still seeing too many fugly index browses for my purposes. I think I will go with a subject fielded keyword search. Thanks all!

Adding a pipe character to the end will get you closer for most searches. Things can get thrown off a little when there's an authority record involved, but in most cases the pipe will work.
