SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
ASSISTANT UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Santa Clara University seeks a creative, technologically savvy
librarian, who is excited about the challenges offered by today’s
rapidly-changing academic libraries. This librarian will fill the newly
redefined position of Assistant University Librarian (AUL) for
Technology Applications and, with the AUL for Public Services, will play
a major collaborative role in formulating services for a new “Learning
Commons and Library” facility, which will house the University
Library, Information Technology, and Media Services. The new facility
is now under construction, and is expected to open in fall, 2008. The
AUL for Technology Applications will provide leadership and strategic
planning for library technology; keep staff current with evolving
technologies; and encourage and support technological innovation and
experimentation.

The successful candidate will supervise the Library Systems Manager and
the Digital Initiatives Librarian and may supervise other staff or
student employees, either directly or as a project manager in a
team-based environment. He/she must have familiarity with current
trends in academic library services and in the use of technology in a
teaching, learning, and research environment. The AUL is expected to
play a lead role in identifying strategic opportunities for innovative
applications of technology in meeting the needs of students, faculty,
and staff. Specific areas of emphasis include: technological support
for assessment of Library programs, services, and resources;
identification of hardware and software, appropriate to Library
technology applications; and collaboration with staff in Information
Technology and Media Services to ensure seamless technology support for
service areas across the three Information Services units. The AUL for
Technology Applications also works with staff of the Heafey Law Library
to coordinate library systems issues; and, under the direction of the
University Librarian, serves as the primary liaison to the
University’s library systems vendor, Innovative Interfaces, Inc.,
and as its official representative to the Innovative Users Group.

Required: MLS, or equivalent, from ALA-accredited program; excellent
interpersonal and communication skills; at least 5 years of library, or
library-related, experience, some of which should be in an academic
environment; management experience equivalent to at least a department
head level in a medium-sized library or other information agency or
company; and demonstrated experience in effectively using technology to
strategically support service innovations and/or productivity
enhancements. Also required: experience with one or more integrated
library systems (Innovative Interfaces preferred); demonstrated project
management experience; knowledge and understanding of existing and
evolving standards, relevant to an academic library environment, such as
Dublin Core, OpenURL, EAD, METS; knowledge of HTML and experience in
developing websites; programming or coding experience with such tools as
Java, PERL, and Cold Fusion; and an understanding of the network and
database environment appropriate to a university setting, e.g., UNIX,
SQL. Desirable: experience with freeware or open source applications,
appropriate to an academic library environment; experience with
commercial and/or open source web content management systems; experience
with the development of digital collections and/or institutional or
discipline-based repositories. Helpful: experience in writing grant
proposals and in administering grants and/or contracts; experience with
consortial-based projects. Initial appointment at the rank of Associate
Librarian or Librarian, depending upon background and experience.
Salary is negotiable with a minimum of $75,000.

Santa Clara University is a comprehensive Jesuit, Catholic university
located at the southern tip of San Francisco Bay, in the heart of
Silicon Valley. The University has a targeted enrollment of
approximately 4,800 undergraduates and 3,500 graduate students.
California’s oldest institution of higher education offers a rigorous
undergraduate curriculum in arts and sciences, business, and
engineering, plus nationally ranked graduate programs in business,
engineering, law, education, counseling psychology, and pastoral
ministries. The University Library (http://www.scu.edu/library) has a
staff of 37 (13 librarians). SCU is currently building a new
“Learning Commons and Library” (http://www.scu.edu/newlibrary) .
The first phase of this new facility, an Automated Retrieval System,
was opened in early 2005. Construction for the remainder of the new
library began in the summer of 2006, with completion targeted for late
spring of 2008.
