Re: [IUG] Turnkey systems: standalone tape drives

The Columbia Law Library has been a turnkey site "forever," and I've been
in my current job almost ten years. We have always used the external tape
drive that was part of the turnkey setup, and it has almost always worked
well. At one point we weren't rigorous about cleaning the tapes, and I
learned how important it is to clean them. Towards the end of its life,
just before our server upgrade in 2002, the previous tape drive had become
a little unreliable in that a tape might not verify properly. Our current
tape drive is 5 years old and came with our current server, an Alpha DS10.
We are about to get a new server, a rack-mounted Sun 240, and we will be
getting a new tape drive along with it. On our present server our service
has been flawless, and I expect that this will continue. The tape drive
and the modem are not rack-mounted, they will just perch on top of the
server. The location is not over-stuffed with hardware, so this presents
no problem.
Hope this helps,
Tom Baker

Dear colleagues,
We've been software-only since the mid-1990s, but are planning to go
turnkey. The only tape drive available from III, as part of the turnkey
package, is tabletop. Our Technology Center's policy is to have no
standalone hardware; everything must be rack-mounted. This option isn't
available as part of the turnkey package.
Has anyone had negative experiences with standalone (non-rack-mounted)
tape drives, and if you have, how did you address them?
Thanks very much in advance for your advice!
Best wishes,
David M.
