Mary,

It is confusing, because there are redundancy, overlapping, neglect,
etc, etc....

My experience:

Webpub.def---you still need it for at least two reasons: 1. This is the
file that determines what fields get outputted for display. For
instance, if you do not have 001 field defined in the webpub.def, that
field will not be outputted, so that field will not be displayed; 2.
This file also determines the label you display for the webOPAC. For
instance, if you define your 001 field in the webpub, you can call it
whatever name in the label column, OCLC, OCLC No. or even Mary No.,
whatever you want to call it. The relationship between this and the
ASAA, is not entirely clear to me. I used to define 690 under ASAA to
local subject and it displayed that way in webOPAC. It seems that
webpub.def takes precedence if you define it here, namely, if you define
690 in webpub and call it My Library Subject, this is the label that
will display. I tried it when I redesigned our webOPAC.

The ASAA also controls your Millennium display, so it is not entirely
useless.

As to bib_display, this is actually a formatting page. It determines
the position of different elements and what field or fields to display.
So if webpub.def does not output the fields, you can not display; but
even if webpub.def outputs those fields, you can still choose not to
display them here. For instance, you do not have to use the token that
extracts all information from the bib or limit to certain tags to
extract the information.

Is this clear?

I'm getting a little confused by the terminology. Is bibdisplay.html
the webpacPro equivalent of webpub.def, or a separate file that
interacts with it? If bibdisplay.html replaces webpub.def, are you
saying that the webpubdef=true WWWoption still controls?

Like everybody, we got a baseline webpub.def file with Rel. 2006, but I
ended up suppressing it (changed the name) because it was negating the
settings in my ASAA long label names file, which themselves override
settings in my MARC label names file, and there seemed no
quick-and-dirty way to resolve the discrepancies.

Can someone who's' implemented webpac Pro after investing energy in
label names through ASAA comment on how the settings interact and how
you survived the transition?

Also ensure you have this wwwoption set:

WEBPUBDEF=true

If you're using webpac pro and the bibdisplay.html file there are some
other considerations you need to look into.

Subject: [IUG] Webpub.def question

We're nearly done with a major redesign of our library website,
including our webpac. I finally got the webpub.def file in the staging
directory to do what I want, so I copied it to the live directory. Silly
me, I thought it would behave the same! For some reason, it isn't.
There's a whole bunch of MARC codes displaying (looks like the 008
field) just after our holdings box. (We use b|H|||||b.)

Any clues on why it works in staging but not live???

Thanks, Frustrated in DC
