RE: [IUG] would anyone like to share strategies for passwordauthenticated content

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Irma,

Fortunately we do not have many vendors that require usernames and
passwords. In this day and age every vendor should be capable of
offering IP authentication. Issuing login info from the Reference Desk
was never (EVER) going to work for us so we developed an alternative.

For those resources that require login info we place a web page on our
University web server in a folder that is protected by an .htaccess
file. The .htaccess file only allows our III catalog to access the
contents of the folder. Users selecting "journal x" for example are
routed through III's WAM table to the web page on the University web
server that has the login info for that journal. That web page then has
a link to send the user to the vendor's site. The entry in the WAM table
has the verification level set higher than normal so everyone (on and
off campus) has to enter their name and barcode number in order to
proceed.

Hope this helps!

Hi coworkers,

I have recently asked the question on another listserv so please excuse
any duplication, could anyone share their strategies with dealing with
password authenticated journal content?

Right now we have chosen not to post this content and it's time to
revisit the issue by finding out how other schools are dealing with the
same question.

Does anyone know of a way to efficiently deal with this.

Blessings,

Irma

EWU uses a commercial Content Management System (CMS). One of the
reasons the campus went to a CMS is because it's very easy for people
without web skills to create and maintain web pages -- anybody who takes

the 2-hour introductory workshop can use the system. Since it's
mandated that we use it for our primary web pages, we use it but are not

entirely happy with it. The default options don't do everything we want

it to do. For example, we're only allowed access to the body of the
page, not the head section, so it's difficult to easily add javascript
or CSS.

Fortunately, it's possible to alter the source code, which in some ways
makes the CMS harder to use than Dreamweaver because you have to know
html and how to write code for in-line javascript and CSS.

Good luck to you,
Doris

Lindsey,

In addition to clearing the check box at the left, you can Ctrl-click
anywhere on the line to deselect it for Global Update. Be aware that a
record might be represented by more than one line on the Select Records
screen. That would be the case if you are displaying the Title field
(the default for bib records) and a record has a 240 tag as well as a
245 (assuming your 240s are in field group tag t). If you deselect the
line with the 245 but not the 240, the record might still be selected
for update.

Using the Limit button is another way to filter out records you don't
want to update.

To answer your second question: The little Change/Delete menu that pops
up when you right-click on a line is a shortcut for inputting a command
to either change or delete a variable-length field. Select Change and
manually enter the change to the field, or simply select Delete. When
you go to the Command Input tab, you will see a command already input
for you. Personally, I have not found this to be useful, since the
generated command is specific to the particular tag you started from and
usually must be edited anyway to make it work for the other records.

Dear Lindsey,

To unselect records that you do not wish to update, you can click on
the check box to the left of the screen. Don't click on the displayed
field or you will unselect ALL the other records instead.

Alternatively, before you open Global Update, you can select specified
records and use the "remove" command to eliminate these records from
your review file.

When I have searched and found a group of records which I wish to
global update, how do I remove a title(s) from the list which I do not
wish to update? I have noticed that, when I highlight an entry, a box
appears when I right click that gives me the option to either "change"
or "delete" -- is this how I remove a title from my global update list?
And what does "change" in the box mean? Thanks in advance for any
help!

We found that holds can be placed on order bibs unless the only item
attached is nonholdable. Once a holdable item is attached the system
allows the holds to be placed. Doesn't this have to do with the loan
rules and not the loader? Isn't the problem you describe following the
holds parameters you have set up?

Hi all,

We are considering creating a load table that would load the bib, order
and
attached items. However, we allow holds on "on order" bibs and once the
items are attached to the record users can no longer place holds via the
Web OPAC. Is there any way around this? We use title-level holds. We
also only allow holds on checked-out items.

Howdy,

In the text-based server side under Innovative Catalog Database
Status (path: M>I>F>D), we are seeing the following text:

There are [#] heading changes to report. File is [#]% full.
There are [#] Millennium heading changes to report. File is [#]% full.

We have figured out that the second entry seems to relate to the
headings reports, and fluctuates as reports are run and the cleared.
However, we can't figure out what the first entry is supposed to
represent, and nothing we are currently running seems to affect the
total.

I have looked through all of the documentation that I can find
relating to it, but have run across no specific mention of it.

So, does anyone out there know what the difference is between
"heading changes" and "Millennium heading changes"?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

Hi

At Waitakere (Auckland, NZ) we have just recently changed our printers
to Sato CX Series, this style of printer prints out from a single roll
(which we have all ways used) and we find that it is quite and very fast
(compared to the old dot matrix printer we used to have). Saito labels
in NZ http://www.saito.co.nz/index.htm can customise the labels to your
specific size and colour.

The only small problem (well not so much of a problem more of an
observation) is that we go through more printer ribbons than ever before
and a lot of the ribbon is wasted because we only print on a small
section of the ribbon.

Thanks,
Heather Paton.

At the IUG Conference in San Jose, we had a Birds of a Feather session

Hello -

Just a follow-up on my posting of 5/29/07 in case anyone ever needs to
do anything similar. We were able to accomplish what we wanted by
following the suggestions in Bob Duncan's response (see below). So it
doesn't appear that in our case we will need to purchase the multiple IP
WAM product.

Thanks to Bob (and all others) who responded. Your advice was much
appreciated!

If you also have resources that are available to the Main campus but
not to the Health Sciences campus (the reverse of what you describe
above), then you'll probably want the multi-IP WAM product that Mark
Stoffan mentioned.

But if the only case is that the Health Sciences campus has access to
resources that Main does not (i.e., Health Science can access
everything that Main can), then I think you have your service levels
backwards. The higher service level should be assigned to the campus
with the higher level of privilege---for the situation you describe,
Main should have a service level of 4 in LNA and Health Science
should have a service level of 8. Then in your WAM table, for the
resources that only Health Science can access, if you set the verify
value to 5, any computer with a service level less than 5 (e.g.,
Main) will have to verify, and any computer with a service level
greater than 5 will not.

You don't mention what you do with the service level values in the
WAM forward table, but this will depend on whether the resources are
restricted to the Health Science physical campus or to patrons
affiliated with the Health Science campus (regardless of their
physical location). If the resources are really restricted to the
campus, then set the service level to 8. If access is not restricted
to the physical campus, set the service level to 0 and make sure your
Main campus patrons have different PTypes than Health Science patrons.

Does this make sense?

Bob Duncan

informatics concepts; membership in the Academy of Health Information
Professionals.

Salary: Based on qualifications and experience with a minimum of
$42,000; excellent benefits.

Faculty Rank: This is a non-tenured faculty position with faculty rank
