Subject: [IUG] IUG Beacon Award (new at San Jose conference)
Date: Mon, 21 May 2007 05:51:05 -0400
Hi -- I will send out a more formal notice later, but I wanted to let
those who were not in attendance at IUG 2007 know that we now have
created an award for exceptional service to the Innovative Community
by people at member libraries. In case you need a reminder, many
people were nominating Bob Duncan for the award that did not exist.
So, thanks to the IUG Steering Committee, especially Cheryl Gowing
who was about to design and acquire the award in two day's time in
Miami, we now have an annual tribute to offer a member of the
Innovative users community who has traditionally gone above and
beyond the call of duty. Now while I was originally calling this the
Bob Duncan Award, we decided to call this the "IUG Beacon Award" and
chose a lighthouse for its symbol. The award is hereby established to:
"To honor exceptional service to the Innovative Users Community
through presentations, collaboration, selfless dedication to
libraries as a whole, and sage advice to others via the IUG List."
Our symbol will be a lighthouse to symbolize:
-Inspiration
-Navigation
-Illumination
-Protection
And as I said during the opening session, a great implementation is
the product of a great employee, but someone who helps other attain
greatness and shares the knowledge that she/he gained in the process
is a great community member. This award is to honor the latter. You
can think of it like the "Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award" at the
Academy Awards which is presented to acknowledge a lifetime of works.
Recipients will be selected by the past-chairs and the Steering
Committee with some process to be determined in the future. I believe
the nomination process will be coordinated by the current Past Chair
and the selecting committee will consist of the IUG Past Chairs and
the IUG Steering Committee.
The 2007 recipient of the award is...
Bob Duncan
Lafayette College
2007 - San Jose
However, we took this opportunity to recognize essentially the first
winner of the award as it was presented at our 10th conference in
Houston,
Mieko Yamaguchi
The University of Wales, Bangor
2002 - Houston
We will create a web page on the IUG site for this award along with a
photo of what the original awards looked like. That page will also
have information on how to nominate people for the award...as soon as
we think of them.
Congratulations to Bob and Mieko.
Best -- Corey
