Just a thought about the recall option. It is possible to recall items without changing the due date on them. I do this when a book that needs some less-than-urgent attention and is also needed by a patron.

Subject: [IUG] Prevent items from being renewed during transition

This summer we are moving one of our libraries into a new building. As
if this weren't work enough, we are also having leave a portion of our
collection behind. The current library is a shared use facility and
about 10,000 of the items in it belong to the school district.

We've done a variety of things that will make the physical separation of
any school books that are on the shelf relatively easy to do . We are
going to add a status to all of our items that will prevent holds but
allow renewals. This means that people can keep the items they have
checked out during the transition and (I hope) we won't be flooded with
returns. Also, those items that are at the library will stay there so
we have nice full shelves when the new building opens.

However I'm not sure about the best way to handle school items that are
checked out. At some point we are going to need to get them out of our
system and back to the school district. This is especially important
now that we have implemented a policy of unlimited renewals.

Recalling them is the obvious answer, but we don't currently use the
recall feature and I don't really want to be in the position of telling
people we need the items back a few days or a week after they've checked
them out.

Theoretically we could pick a point at which to change their location or
item type so that they start operating under a circ rule that does not
allow renewals, right? We have Circ Option 40 set to yes, so I think
this should work.

Does anyone who has ever been through this before have any
recommendations or warnings for me on this one?
