We recently had some down time while a disk was replaced. This is what I
would recommend.

First make sure each PC has been set up correctly-terminal numbers and
scanner validity. It sounds silly, but it is so important to have the
terminal number for us-we have 73 locations.

Have a staff member check out a test record first and last in the file.
This will indicate that the file has processed after you load. Once we come
up, we are bombarded with offline files. The system will tell you that
there were 650 transactions loaded from 3 files, but you cannot say for
certain that the file included the 78 records from library "b". However
staff can look at the patron records of the test transactions to see that
the file ran before purging.

Some of our libraries make a copy of the c:/millennium/offline/circ.dat file
and save it to their desktop as insurance before sending. It is overkill,
but not a bad backup plan. They can always email the file to you if need
be.

Lastly, look at the error files. Most of it can be ignored, but you can
catch those transactions that didn't scan right or needed holds attention
(we do not process holds or fines in our offline loads).

Subject: [IUG] Millennium Offline Circ

Our III server is going to be replaced. Naturally, in doing so our III
system will be down.
We plan on running Millennium Offline Circulation in 6 branches that
day.
Any words of wisdom?
We did come to the conclusion that we don't want to check in material as
we will not know if it should be put InTransit to another branch to be
shelved. The report that is produced upon loading the transactions does
not appear to show items InTransit unless there is a hold for that item.
Plus, it will be double work to check them in using Offline Circ and
then have to go through them later looking for material these items. We
think it will just be easier to set items to be checked in aside and
check them in when the new server is up and running.
Thank you,
Linda
