At Berkeley Public Library, barcode searching is not enabled for the public OPAC. This is important for the patron privacy reasons already mentioned and one additional one: As a library running the CheckPoint RFID system, the RFID tags on our books are encoded with the barcode number. By not having the barcode searchable by the public, this prevents the ability for someone to look up items via barcode searching in the unlikely event that they intercepted the RFID signal sent from the books as patrons left the building.
