Patricia and Bob,
thanks for these instructions. Since I often get these strange
characters, I was very happy about the fix. Still, I must be doing
something wrong, and wonder if you have a solution for that too: while
I'm not getting any square boxes etc. anymore (looks really pretty!), I
also don't get the diacritics - Büchner shows up as Buchner, été as ete,
etc. Any ideas?

I received help from Bob Rasmussen. In case anyone is
interested, here is the way to do it!
The file is in Unicode UTF-8
encoding. You have to tell Excel that.
1) Do File:Open.
2) Set {quot}Files of type{quot} to {quot}Text files{quot}.
3) Find your file, and click {quot}Open{quot}.
4) The {quot}Text Import Wizard{quot} should open. In {quot}File
Origin{quot} you can tell
Excel the encoding of the data. Scroll way down, and select {quot}65001
Unicode
(UTF-8){quot}. In the preview window, the text should look good.
5) Continue through the wizard.
It should look good, except that the combining double ligatures for
transliterated Russian are not likely to display well. For that matter,
some of the other combining diacritics may be poorly handled as
well.
Many thanks to Bob.
