We also had this problem and bought parallel modules for the printers while on 2005. 

However, since we upgraded to 2006 this problem seems to have disappeared and the installation of drivers was a  cinch.  A nice bonus since in my experience, we love the performance of the Epson, but sometimes the installation of the drivers can be a real beast.

We found the same thing we did our internal tests, which is why we stuck with LPT Parallel Epson printers instead of the USB printers.

We just trying out the epson TM88IV USB printers at our circ desks and find that when checking out there is a 4 or 5 second printing pause between items. All items will eventually print. Previously we were using TM88III on lpt printer ports and printing is instantaneous. Has any experienced this and found any work arounds,
