You could also have the staff members use the testing server. But,
honestly, if a staff member is helping a patron at a reference desk or other
place, either the patron or the staff member will be confused about the fact
that the OPAC looks different from how they expect. I'd try and find one
way that will work for all.

Fran,
Let me make a suggestion to you not related directly to your question.
When we went through our Opac upgrade and redesign we wanted a cleaner
look to our Opac as well. One of the things we decided to do in lieu of
going with the brief display was to turn off extra fields in the web
Opac display to clean up the display. Before the redesign we showed all
fields. For example we suppressed from display the
003,005,008,010,020,022,040,490 etc. This really cleaned up the visual
display of records. If staff wants to see this info they can click on
the marc record display.

The second thing we did was to make sure the label tags were clear and
consistent in the display. For example we wrote out description instead
of descrip etc. What I am getting at is you can find ways to streamline
the display without doing anything extreme.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the public WebPAC default to
the "brief" display but have the staff WebPAC default to the "extended"
display? Our PR/Marketing person recommended changing to the "brief"
display to give the catalog a cleaner look. However, the selectors find
that much harder to work with when they are checking what we already
have in the catalog. (I haven't heard what the patrons themselves think
about it yet.)

As a compromise, I thought that letting staff log in through "My
Millennium" would be good. Unfortunately, I can't see anything in the
manual about modifying the INDEX_EXT WWWOption with a PTYPE. Am I
missing something, or is this just not available?

Thanks,
Fran
