RE: [IUG] URL checker questions

We are also interested in getting the URL checker, and so I looked at
Mary's presentation (the link is below) which was very helpful.
However, a lot of our 856 URLS are GPO PURLs, and if I understand her
presentation correctly, the URL checker reports those as "Temporarily
Moved" and you have to check those manually. The UM doen not say
anything about this issue.
Am I correct? What do folks do about those PURLs?
Also, what are people using for checking URLS in other parts of their
web sites with links?
Thanks for any info.

1. Can we delete a line from the report when we are finished working
with it?

**No. There have been enhancement requests to make the URL checker work
more like the headings reports, but they have yet to go anywhere. In
the meantime, you could run a new interactive report after fixing a
bunch of entries -- then work the only the interactive report, which
will not contain the errors you've fixed. The automatic report won't be
updated to reflect your changes until the next run (usually 1 week
later).

2. Why is the number of errors listed on the report different from the
number in the hidden review file of URL Verification Errors?

**I don't know but suspect this has something to do with a count of
records vs. a count of errors. Do you still have 856 fields with more
than one subfield u?

3. Can we get a list of all error types and their definitions?

**The error types are listed under VIEW -- Error types in the URL
checker module. Unfortunately, I know of no good list of definitions.
It is clear that any sort of redirect will be listed as 302 Moved
temporarily, even those that are simply to insert a timestamp. Leaving
off the final slash on a directory listing will also cause a redirect (
example: http://my_domain.org/trash redirects to
http://my_domain.org/trash/) which shows up as a 302 error.

Not sure how much has changed since my last URL checker presentation
(2004) http://staff.cua.edu/strouse/presentations/MILURLjul04.ppt but it
might be worth a look for workflow tips -- especially if you're just
starting out.
