RE: [IUG] CD & DVD box sets with 3M selfcheck machines.

Peter,
I'm not sure that you can set the self check to allow multiple book
detection for special itypes. What we chose to do was to discontinue
security stripping all pieces, we only security strip the last item as
it is closest to the 3M cradle. This actually works for us and has not
increased our theft rate. For items that had all pieces security
stripped already, instead of having to remove the strips we just
desentized them and do not resensitize at checkin. Hope this helps.

Subject: [IUG] CD & DVD box sets with 3M selfcheck machines.

Hello,

At Leeds we have come up against the problem of allowing
self-checkout of DVD and CD box sets using our 3M self-check
machines. Each 'item' consists of a box set containing
multiple CDs/DVDs, each of which has a Tattle-Tape strip
attached.

We currently keep these items at the counter and have staff
issue them, obviously this is not good enough and we're
trying to find a way to allow sets of multiple CDs and DVDs
to be self-checked.

Several solutions have been proposed, the neatest one seems
to be adding a new i-type for CD/DVD box sets. This would
be recognised by the 3M selfcheck such that multiple-book
detection is turned off and all items can be desensitised at
once.

This sounds OK to me, but I would appreciate any suggestions
(or tales of woe?) from other libraries that have met with
this problem.

If you want to reply off-list feel free, I'll summarise for
the benefit of the list later.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew Preater
