Another reply came to me off-list re: Rel 2006 upgrade.
The essence is that library said they had several issues, some that were
severe:
- if there were diacritics in the bib record then there could be
problems with hold shelf clearance reports, the tabs in some patron
record displays, paging slips, and other functions
- there is a patch that should be installed first for floating
collections
- this library cautioned about bringing up OPAC Pro at the same time as
Rel 2006. If they were to do it again, they would install Rel 2006,
wait, and then upgrade to WebPac pro.
FYI

Colleagues --
This is a summary of the replies regarding upgrades to Rel. 2006 that
were either sent to me off-list, or were posted to the list.

We upgraded directly from Mil2005 to Mil2006 over the summer. Prior to
Millennium, all our self- upgrades went very smoothly, with hardly any
calls to III to help out. With Millennium, it seems that the program is
so much larger, robust, complicated, whatever, that invariably some
files get dropped or otherwise screwed up a bit during the upgrade
process.
So the last three upgrades, involving Millennium, for us, have all
required III to intervene in some way. Nothing too major. One upgrade
messed up our InnReach functions, but III fixed it in a timely manner.
This latest upgrade, to Mil2006, has caused some strange OPAC displays,
which I have yet to report to III. And some Millennium buttons
disappeared, but they have been restored.
Course, each release has some bugs in it, which we all discover after
upgrading. I now approach each upgrade as an adventure and my hotline
to III is always ready.

We went from Rel 2005 to Rel 2006 and skipped 2006LE. Yes, the upgrade
"ran smooth as silk for us". But we have encountered a problem with the
Circ module and disappearing circ items. We have an open call but the
problem seems to be hit and miss so they are having a problem providing
a fix. The tab will show checked out items but when you click on it
there are no records to view. If you close the record and start over the
items will show up. It does not happen on every patron record -- thus
the problem. We have had no other problems to date.

This past Wednesday we upgraded from Rel 2005 to Rel 2006 and we have
not seen any issues (so far).
While this isn't a problem, I did notice that the load and build took
much longer than the 2005 upgrade. Even so, it was on the order of 2
hours from start to finish.

We upgraded to Rel 2006 (from 2005) on August 17. I have nothing in my
notes about any problems with the upgrade.

We went from 2005 to 2006 without installing the 2006LE. Everything went
smoothly as far as the basic III system went. There were issues
involving the RFID software (Biblioteca) which went to III software
engineering for a resolution.

We upgraded our TEST server within a couple of days of the announcement.
The process took one hour for the prep phase and two hours for the
commit phase, a lot of the two hours going to an Oracle database
'conversion' sort of thing. There was a problem at the end that
innovative saw automatically and fixed instantly that I never knew about
until they called.
Due to the 'two hour' slot, we plan to wait until Thanksgiving Day
holidays to upgrade the Production system.
We saw no unexpected problems attributable to the upgrade

Colleagues --
Sometimes the discussion list can skew my (our) perception of new
releases, functions, etc..., because we mostly post to the list when
there are problems.
Having said that - I'd like to hear if there are libraries that have
done the upgrade from Rel 2005 straight to Rel 2006, skipping 2006LE,
and that it basically went well for you. We are not planning to go to
WebPac Pro at this time, so all of those issues are a moot point for us.
I am hoping to use the upcoming Columbus Day holiday when we are closed
to the public, as a time to get the Rel 2006 upgrade done. This
schedule has worked well for us previous years, as we did experience
some headaches with printers not working immediately after the upgrade.
Being closed for a whole day gave me a leisurely day to upgrade, fix
unforeseen problems, and get some other tech work done without the
public or staff in the building.
I will look forward to your confidence-building comments like "Sure, the
upgrade ran smooth as silk for us". And serious - if you've found it to
be buggy, we do want to hear that too.
Thanks,
Paul
