Good point. The Colour Contrast Analyser at this site is helpful in that regard:

Scroll down a bit and enter the hex values for your fore- and
background colors & find out if they have sufficient contrast. I don't
know that they address problems for color-blind users, though (and I
imagine red and green would be the most troublesome colors there).
